Born in Germany in 1880, Joseph Pilates was a sickly child; suffering from asthma and rickets. He was determined to strengthen his body and practiced body building, gymnastics, and more. When World War I broke out, Pilates was interned and taught his method to other internees. He was wildly credited that none of his trainees died during the influenza epidemic of 1918. After the war, he immigrated to New York, meeting his wife on the boat trip to America. They established a studio in New York. Pilates has had a steady following with dancers and performers.
